Simon Carrell trained under Dave Penrose at his workshop which originated on Twickenham’s Eel Pie Island, the site of famous concerts by such bands as The Who and The Rolling Stones. Ten years ago, Simon setup his own workshop by Ham Common, Richmond. Frequently he works inside clients homes for briefs designed for a specific space, from a small alcove project to the entire house. “My ability to produce high quality pieces in any wood that fit perfectly with their surroundings is very important”.
“Whenever possible I use sustainable woods such as American walnut and American oak, which are plentiful. Particularly in modern urban living it’s important more than ever to keep our contact with the natural world and think about tomorrow. We can’t go on mass producing plastics and it’s depressing to see the amount of unrecyclable plastics used for furniture these days. There will soon be a huge gap in the tradition of antique wooden furniture and that’s a really sad thing. There are so many inspiring design influences in London - it’s a wonderful thing to commission a piece of furniture and hopefully my work combines some of the most recent design ideas with the oldest of materials.”
